It’s not politics, it’s People.

Good afternoon Lynchburg,

Thank you for being here today. I stand before you to announce my candidacy to represent Ward 1 for Lynchburg City Council and ask for your support. I have been dedicated to the well-being of our beloved city for as long as I can remember. This is my home, and I care about what happens here. It’s not the physical location of this city I care most about, although the James River, beautiful mountains, hills, and neighborhoods do make me smile. But it is the people in the Hill City that I care deeply about and I want to see thrive.  Unfortunately, local politics have become uncivilized, unproductive, and the current status quo is putting Lynchburg’s ability to flourish at risk. With your help we can restore confidence in council. 

Speaking of manners, I apologize for not introducing myself. My name is Cameron Emily Craddock Howe and I am a product of ward one. I was born here and I grew up here. I attended Lynchburg public schools. I graduated from the University of Lynchburg and I chose to make this city my home as an adult, wife, and mother. There is an importance in actively choosing to pour into the things that matter to you, and for me that is the Lynchburg Community. 

When we are selecting the next representative for Ward 1 this fall, it should be their experience and service that guides our decision. In late 2019, when Lynchburg City Council appointed me to the GLTC Board of Directors, I didn't anticipate the challenges that lay ahead, like a global pandemic. Despite these hurdles, our board and organization rallied together and achieved significant milestones. These included reinstating Sunday service, requiring board members to ride the bus annually, offering free fares during extreme weather, and implementing a fare free day in September to assist citizens in obtaining an ID and early voting. We’ve worked on cleaning up our budget, creating policy to ensure financial stability, and reducing our outsourcing to be more cost effective. Together we have been able to expand access while improving our budget and board accountability. 

Having worked in the private, non-profit, small business, and mental health sectors of Lynchburg, I understand how vital it is to work together to solve some of the toughest issues and that is what I will do on council. Working as a zoning official for Lynchburg is where I’ve gained some very valuable experience. The heart of the city I love is in community development. It is there that I’ve gotten to see first hand our tax dollars at work in a variety of ways.

When looking at where we are as a city and where we want to go, we need to consider all of the issues our community is facing and make decisions to position us for long term success. Party politics do not belong in local government. We need to stay focused on what matters and not be distracted by partisan agendas. 

When I am on council, I will be committed to what Lynchburg needs, such as strong schools, safe streets and being mindful of spending our citizens' hard earned tax dollars. We need to continue to increase collaboration, transparency, and accountability. With your help we can do more with less.

This city council election isn’t about politics, it is about people. It’s about you, it’s about us, it’s about my kids, it’s about yours kids.  Our city's policies don't have to be tangled in conflict. We have a chance to build consensus and unite as a community.  I am prepared to serve the residents of Ward 1 and the beautiful Hill City, that I am blessed to call home. Today, I am taking the initial steps by formally declaring my candidacy and I can’t do this alone, but we can do it together. I am Cameron Craddock Howe and I humbly ask for your vote for Lynchburg City Council in Ward 1.

Gracias por estar aquí hoy. Me presento ante de ustedes para anunciar mi candidatura para representar al Distrito 1 para el Concejo Municipal de Lynchburg y les pido su apoyo. Me he dedicado al bienestar de nuestra querida ciudad desde que tengo memoria. Esta es mi hogar y me importa lo que sucede aquí. No es la ubicación física de esta ciudad lo que más me importa, aunque el río James, las hermosas montañas, las colinas y los vecindarios me hacen sonreír. Pero es la gente de “Hill City” la que me importa profundamente y quiero ver prosperar.  Desafortunadamente, la política local se ha vuelto incivilizada, improductiva, y el statu quo actual está poniendo en riesgo la capacidad de Lynchburg para prosperar. Con su ayuda podemos restaurar la confianza en el consejo. 

Hablando de modales, pido disculpas por no haberme presentado. Mi nombre es Cameron Emily Craddock Howe y soy producto del distrito uno. Nací aquí y crecí aquí. Asistí a las escuelas públicas de Lynchburg. Me gradué de la Universidad de Lynchburg y elegí hacer de esta ciudad mi hogar como adulto, esposa y madre. Hay una importancia en elegir activamente volcar en las cosas que te importan, y para mí esa es la Comunidad de Lynchburg. 

Cuando seleccionemos al próximo representante para el Distrito 1 este otoño, debe ser experiencia y servicio lo que guíe nuestra decisión. A finales de 2019, cuando el Ayuntamiento de Lynchburg me nombró miembro de la Junta Directiva de GLTC, no anticipé los desafíos que se avecinaban, como una pandemia mundial. A pesar de estos obstáculos, nuestra junta directiva y nuestra organización se unieron y lograron hitos significativos. Estas incluyeron el restablecimiento del servicio dominical, el requisito de que los miembros de la junta viajen en el autobús anualmente, la oferta de tarifas gratuitas durante el clima extremo y la implementación de un día sin tarifas en septiembre para ayudar a los ciudadanos a obtener una identificación y votar anticipadamente. Hemos trabajado en la limpieza de nuestro presupuesto, la creación de políticas para garantizar la estabilidad financiera y la reducción de nuestra subcontratación para que sea más rentable. Juntos hemos podido ampliar el acceso y mejorar nuestro presupuesto y la responsabilidad de la junta directiva. 

Después de haber trabajado en los sectores privados, y organicassiones sin fines de lucro, pequeñas empresas, a compañias de la salud mental de Lynchburg, entiendo lo vital que es trabajar juntos para resolver algunos de los problemas más difíciles y eso es lo que haré en el consejo. Trabajando como oficial de zonificación para Lynchburg es donde he adquirido una experiencia muy valiosa. El corazón de la ciudad que amo está en el desarrollo de la comunidad. Es allí donde he podido ver de primera mano el dinero de nuestros impuestos en acción en una variedad de formas.

Al mirar dónde estamos como ciudad y hacia dónde queremos ir, debemos considerar todos los problemas que enfrenta nuestra comunidad y tomar decisiones que nos posicionen para el éxito a largo plazo. La política partidista no pertenece al gobierno local. Tenemos que mantenernos centrados en lo que importa y no dejarnos distraer por agendas partidistas. 

Cuando esté en el Concejo, estaré comprometida con lo que Lynchburg necesita, como escuelas sólidas, calles seguras y ser consciente de gastar el dinero de los impuestos que nuestros ciudadanos ganan con tanto esfuerzo. Tenemos que seguir aumentando la colaboración, la transparencia y la rendición de cuentas. Con la ayuda de ustedes podemos hacer más con menos.

Esta elección del concejo municipal no se trata de política, se trata de personas. Se trata de ti, se trata de nosotros, se trata de mis hijos, se trata de tus hijos.  Las políticas de nuestra ciudad no tienen por qué estar enredadas en conflictos. Tenemos la oportunidad de construir un consenso y unirnos como comunidad.  Estoy preparado para servir a los residentes del Distrito 1 y a la hermosa “Hill City,” a la que tengo la bendición de llamar mi hogar. Hoy estoy dando los primeros pasos al declarar formalmente mi candidatura y no puedo hacerlo solo, pero podemos hacerlo juntos. Soy Cameron Craddock Howe y humildemente les pido su voto para el Concejo Municipal de Lynchburg en el Distrito 1.
